Christmas is, without a doubt, the most important festive season we Aussies have. It goes far beyond its religious roots — it’s become a celebration for every family, a time for love, peace and joy. But here’s the not-so-jolly bit: according to the CSIRO, we produce up to 30% more waste over the festive season! Picture this — Australians get through more than 150,000km of wrapping paper at Christmas, enough to wrap around the equator nearly four times. And I’ll be honest — I’m no better than the rest of us.

The difference is that I’ve started thinking about it a whole lot more since opening this store. I’m not just a shopper anymore — I’m a supplier who might actually do some good here. And it turns out this little shift has quietly shaped so many of my choices, from the products I pick to the way I pack them. The best part? Discovering just how many people out there are doing the very same thing to keep our planet healthy. So here are a few tips I’d love to share with you.

First, go handmade whenever you can. Less machinery means less energy — and even better, your money goes straight into the hands of local makers, whether here in Australia or in rural and less fortunate communities elsewhere, helping them stand on their own two feet.

Then there’s wrapping, the great unsung villain of Christmas morning. There’s so much to choose from now: recycled paper, recycled plastics, even zero-waste fabrics. And yes — even the bubble wrap we use for shipping is biodegradable!

When it comes to decorations, think quality over quantity. The good ones last for years. Reuse them, rearrange them, dream up a fresh idea each Christmas to make them feel brand new. It’s a lovely little mental workout and a wonderful family activity rolled into one.

Keep an eye out for recycled and recyclable materials too. There are loads of options these days, and honestly? With many of them, you’d never guess they were once something else entirely — unless someone told you!

It also pays to buy local, or at least buy together. Ordering several things from one site rather than many saves you on shipping and trims that carbon footprint. But beware — some big companies ship from multiple depots, so your order may still turn up in separate parcels. This is exactly why I bring products from different countries together in bulk: so you can enjoy a little something from abroad without the hefty shipping cost or guilt.

And finally — think before you buy. Sounds funny coming from a store owner, doesn’t it? But returned goods often can’t be passed on to someone else, for all sorts of reasons. My real hope is that whatever you choose from our store stays with you for many Christmases to come.
