Nativity-Themed Retablo

This wonderful folk art retablo comes from the workshop of Alejandro Chávez in Peru. The nativity-themed retablo is crafted by hand from wood and ceramic, with faux-leather hinges on the doors that open to reveal the scene within. Such retablos were inspired by the portable altarpieces first brought to Peru by Spanish colonisers, reimagined over generations into a beloved Andean folk-art tradition.
